Our School

Catholic Education in Duncan, BC

Why Queen of Angels?

Queen of Angels Catholic School is a warm and welcoming school nurtured in Catholic Christian values.

We believe that the students come first, in an inclusive and caring environment. We house programs for students from our Early Learning centre (ages 3 and 4) through to Grade 9. We feel it is important that every child has the opportunity to succeed. For this reason we offer many different events, programs, and opportunities for our students. We focus on all aspects of the whole child: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Cultural, Emotional, and Artistic. See our programs below or click the button below to learn more about our school.

About Our Programs

Queen of Angels Catholic School follows the curriculum as prescribed by the Ministry of Education in the Province of British Columbia.

Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten students learn outside, as well as inside the classroom. Along with providing a multi-sensory experience, an outside classroom allows for our students to improve their activity level, become more creative, develop responsibility, and increase their love for the outdoors, just to name a few.

While we focus on literacy and numeracy, our students are also taught about the importance of Health and Wellness, with faith being the core of all of our subjects. The Kindergarten & Primary students are equipped with a full class iPad mobile cart and access to our computer lab. These students are the first ones to learn French, PE, and Music with our specialist teachers. Click here to see Mrs. Henning’s Kindergarten Website!

Academics

Within those curriculum guidelines every effort is made to adapt activities to individual needs and to encourage students to strive to reach their academic potential in all areas of the curriculum.

All teaching staff are certified by the B.C. College of Teachers.

The school uses the Growth in Faith, Growth in Christ Religious Education program.

The French program is introduced starting in Kindergarten and uses the A.I.M. (Animated Integration Method) of delivering instruction.

The use of technology is integral to our academic programs. Student laptops, iPads, classroom projectors, and document cameras are used to teach students technology skills as well as provide adapted programs when necessary. Students are encouraged to produce creative work using technology to achieve a high standard in their completed assignments.

Fine Arts

Queen of Angels offers a diverse Fine Arts Program for students in Kindergarten through Grade 9.

Queen of Angels Catholic School celebrates two annual school productions: a Christmas Concert for grades K – 6 and a Middle School Fine Arts Evening for grades 7 – 9

Each of these productions highlight student skills in drama, music, dance, and public speaking. Visual arts and Cooking skills are also showcased during the Middle School Fine Arts Evening which is held at school. The Christmas Concert is held at the Cowichan Theatre. Families are invited to attend these events to enjoy the show and share the fun.

Drama gives our students the opportunity to rehearse roles, characters and a broad spectrum of life situations, helping them to explore and address some of the individual and personal ideas and feelings they experience.

Drama is taught throughout the grades in respective classrooms. It is also taught by a specialist in Middle School as one of the Fine Arts choices.

Our music program provides instruction and opportunities to experience music for students in Kindergarten through Grade 9. Students are encouraged to participate through listening, singing, and/or playing an instrument. We are proud to offer our program lead by a music specialist in grades K-4 and band teacher in 5-9.

Students have the opportunity to perform at school assemblies and local events. Examples include the Ts’i’ts’uwatul’ Lelum Assisted Living facility, Downtown Duncan Christmas Light Up, and the Cowichan Music Festival.

Everyone needs a voice. The ability to speak with power, clarity, and confidence is one of the best tools for success in today’s world. Speech Arts develops communication skills and nurtures creativity and artistic expression. Students learn to use their voices to speak clearly and with purpose.

Students have the opportunity to practice Speech Arts by participating in the Hector Macintosh and Island Catholic Schools (ICS) Speech competitions each year.

Students bring to life their creative thoughts through Visual Arts. Our creative and imaginative teachers incorporate art into their classroom curriculum, and you will often find beautiful displays of students work throughout the hallways.

For 4 weeks during January and February, we offer the Artists and Angels program to all students in Grades 4-6. Talented artists from the Cowichan Valley are invited into our classrooms to work with students in their specialist field. Displays of the completed projects are often presented during Catholic Schools Week in early February.

Athletics

At Queen of Angels Catholic School, we offer a well rounded sports program for all students.  PE classes are offered from Kindergarten to grade 9 and taught by specialist teachers.

For grades 3 – 6, we have House Teams that compete on a regular basis in a variety of sports ie. cross country running, floor hockey, basketball.  Houses are led by grade 6 House Captains and a trophy is awarded to the team with the most points at the end of the year.  Fair play and attitude is honoured with a trophy for the “Most Sportsmanlike” house team. Some of our extra curricular activities are offered to our grade 5 and 6 students.
